History of the Gospel Choir     

The Community Gospel Choir was organized in October, 1955 and  Alice Stewart served as the first Directress/Organist. Mrs. Stewart received her music training from the University of Minnesota.  Johnnie Reid, who received her training in Atlanta, Georgia, and Blairville, Pennsylvania, became the second Directress/Organist in 1959.

In June, 1961, the choir came under the direction of  Darrell A. Davis, who received his training at Michigan State Normal College of Ypsilanti. During the fifteen years Mr. Davis served as the Director, the choir was accompanied by first  Christine Stewart and then for many years by Lutilla Combs as the organist. In September of 1976, Charles Jeter became the Director of the choir. In June, 1977, Charles Garner became the organist for the choir.

Mr. Charles B. Garner, who was given formal music lessons at the age of ten, later enhanced his musical ability at Detroit Conservatory of Music. He became the Director / Organist of the choir in November, 1986.

Mrs. Evelyn Davvis received her musical training at Cass Technical High School and Central Michigan University and has a Bachelor Degree in  Music Education. She became the Directress/Organist in July, 1992. In September of 1992,  Beverly M. Glenn became the Directress/Organist. Ms. Glenn majored in music at Oral Roberts University and received her Master of Arts Degree. She also went to Pitzer College and has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Musical Composition. Ms. Glenn is a recording artist, music publisher, conductor and song writer.

In October, 1996, Dr. Stanley Waldon became the choir's Director/Organist. He is well known in the Metropolitan Detroit area as one of its most outstanding contributors to artistic excellence and has accompanied some of the areas' finest vocalists and music groups.

In February, 1999, Garland Gillard became the assistant to the Director of the choir.

From January to December  2000, Rory Dabney, Jerome Jackson, and  Alex Resin served as the  Directors/ Organists of the choir.

In August, 2007 we were blessed with our present Director/Organist, Timothy Cain The choir is composed not of professional musicians but of Christians who enjoy singing God's praises together. The choir has made three albums entitled; "Christ is the Answer","Just to Behold His Face" and "A Live Recording Concert". The choir, throughout the years, has devotedly maintained that gospel songs are an integral part of Negro Spiritual worship; an art that should be nurtured and kept alive. God is not through with us yet, "We've Come This Far By Faith".
